βΌ Amanohashidate Scenic Area – One of Japan’s Three Scenic Views
(Approx. 2.5 hours, including free time for lunch at your own expense)
Amanohashidate, located in Miyazu Bay along the Sea of Japan, is one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, together with Matsushima and Miyajima. Stretching approximately 3.6 km, this unique sandbar is formed by coastal sediment and lined with around 8,000 pine trees, with white sandy beaches on both sides.
Its shape resembles a bridge reaching toward the sky, giving rise to the name “Amanohashidate” (Bridge to Heaven). Situated between the Aso Sea and Miyazu Bay, visitors can enjoy both serene natural scenery and expansive ocean views.
Amanohashidate Viewpoint – “Flying Dragon View”
On Mount Monju, visitors can take a cable car or monorail to the observation deck. From above, Amanohashidate resembles a dragon soaring into the sky, earning the name “Flying Dragon View.”
Cable car / monorail ticket (self-paid): JPY 1,000 (round-trip)
Chion-ji Temple & Monju Hall
Chion-ji Temple enshrines Monju Bosatsu, the deity of wisdom, and is popular for prayers related to academic success. The temple’s gate is the largest in the Tango region.
A unique feature here is the fan-shaped fortune slips. When hung upside down, the fan spreads outward, symbolizing a future that continues to improve. Nearby stands the famous Rotating Bridge, which connects Amanohashidate to the mainland.
Admission: Free
Rotating Bridge – A Rare Mechanical Spectacle
When large boats pass through, the bridge rotates 90 degrees horizontally, much like the hands of a clock, allowing vessels to pass before slowly returning to position. The rotation occurs at irregular times and is a fascinating sight to witness.
Amanohashidate Beach (Seasonal)
White sandy beaches stretch along both sides of the sandbar. Stroll beneath pine trees, enjoy the clear waters, or relax by the sea.
Swimming is available in summer only.
